چکیده

We have read with great interest the article of Simionescu C et al. (“Uterine pseudotumors”, Rom J Morphol Embryol, 2011, 52(3):743–748) [1]. This authors described “signet-ring stromal tumor” (SRST) and consider this lesion as “an unusual reactive process, which is suggested to be more frequent that it has been thought”. The microscopic illustration of the lesion is not reported. This pathological entity does not exist. The citations of the Simionescu C et al. are wrong because the content does not regard SRST. The paper of Cappellari JO et al. [2] describes a lymph node lesion: “Signet-ring cell sinus histiocytosis, a previously unrecognized histologic nodal condition mimicking metastatic adenocarcinoma”. Guerrero-Medrano J et al. [3] have reported “signet-ring histiocytosis” in four of 316 radical prostatectomy specimens (1.2%) and in two of 184 axillary dissections (1.08%). This finding can be confused with metastatic adenocarcinoma. The observations of Cappellari JO et al. and GuerreroMedrano J et al. regard lymph nodal pathology. Consequently, this finding does not support the existence of SRST. Occasionally, signet-ring cells of non-epithelial origin are found in the endometrium. Decidualized or pseudodecidualized endometrial stromal cells may have a signet-ring appearance, or may be histiocytes [4–6]. In the first case, the presence of decidualized stromal cells without a signet-ring morphology assists in diagnosis. Histiocytes, some of which may have signet-ring morphology, usually occur as aggregates within the endometrial stroma or lying free. The absence of staining with broad-spectrum cytokeratins and epithelial markers in both decidualized stromal cells and histiocytes assists in problematic cases. CD68 immunostaining assists in confirming the presence of histiocytes that often have characteristic “coffee-bean” nuclei. We have also observed signet-ring cells-like of stromal origin in the endometrium secondary to the effects of cautery. It is evident that these alterations are not defined for the neoplastic nature, as the “tumor” term implied. We believe that the lesion reported by Simionescu C et al. [1] is an “epithelioid leiomyoma, clear cell subtype” [7].

Comment to the Letter to the Editor: Does "signet-ring stromal tumor" exist? In reply to the comments by Teresa Pusiol et al.

The observation of Pusiol T et al. (2013) [1] is justified, and we apologize, the mistake occurred here when translating the reply to the journal. More specific, instead of “Signet-ring-like stromal non-tumoral cells” the final translation showed “Signet-ring stromal tumor”. As a proof of this is also the legend of the image, which is referred to in the text, respectively “Figure 2 – (h) Non-tu...

Signet-Ring Cell Carcinoma Mimicking Gastric Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor Confirmed by Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Trucut Biopsy

A submucosal gastric adenocarcinoma, especially the signet ring cell type, is rare. The histologic evaluation techniques for this lesion has not been established; however, histologic confirmation is very important for decision of treatment method. Here, we report a 57-year-old man with a 12-cm gastric submucosal signet ring cell type adenocarcinoma, diagnosed by an endoscopic ultrasound-guided ...

Nonneoplastic endometrial signet-ring cells. Vacuolated decidual cells and stromal histiocytes mimicking adenocarcinoma.

We describe 5 patients (mean age, 50 years; all had uterine bleeding) whose routine endometrial biopsy and curettage specimens contained prominent signet-ring cells. Each specimen contained loose aggregates of signet-ring cells scattered within the endometrial stroma that were characterized by peripherally displaced, small, uniform nuclei with indistinct nucleoli and showed no mitotic activity....

Breast and ovarian metastatic localization of signet-ring cell gastric carcinoma.

Breast metastatic localization from extramammary neoplasms is rare (1.7–6.6% in old autoptic series, 1.2–2% in clinical reports and 2.7% in cytological series) [1]. We describe the first case of a metastatic deposit to the breast and ovary from gastric signet-ring cell carcinoma to be reported in the literature. In March 1999, a 39-year-old woman underwent abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salp...

Primary Signet Ring Cell Adenocarcinoma of the Urinary Bladder: A Report of 2 Cases☆

Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is a rare and aggressive histologic subtype of adenocarcinoma. In general, this tumor occurs in the middle age, and clinical presentation does not differ from transitional cell carcinomas. The prognosis is often poor, given the advanced stage at diagnosis. To our knowledge, <100 cases of signet ring cell adenocarcinoma of the urinary bla...
